Alce Harfield

Alce was born in Sussex in 1966 into an unusually artistic family. She grew up surrounded by photographers, art teachers, architects and printmakers, so it came as no surprise when she embarked on an artistic career of her own!

Alce studied at Worthing College of Art, prior to gaining an honours degree in Interior Design from Leicester Polytechnic. From here she moved down to Bristol where she spent several years designing interiors for shops, offices and pubs as well as working on a variety of domestic projects. Despite her busy working life, Alce found the time to set up a studio and indulge her passion for painting in the evenings and at weekends. With typical energy and determination, she rented a stall and sold her work in all weathers.

In 1992 Alce set up her first retail outlet which she used to sell her own work alongside that of other local artists. Numerous premises later she started to devote herself full-time to painting. Over the years, she has made her name at a wide variety of exhibition venues across the South West, and produces regular commissions for individual collectors.

Painted in acrylics on paper, Alce’s work betrays a wide range of influences stemming from her love and knowledge of other artists. Eager to experiment, she is well known for a broad spectrum of work, including landscapes and cityscapes, figurative pieces and more whimsical contemporary imagery. The years of hard work and dedication have now paid off and she has a loyal following which is growing constantly.
