Derek Brown
Painting is a second professional career for Derek, who was born in London in 1924. After five years of active military service Derek continued his education, graduating as a dentist in 1952.
Derek’s natural interest in art and painting encouraged him to develop and improve his artistic technique with help from tuition at Heatherley School of Fine Art. He was influenced and supported in his work by the Australian impressionist Hayward Veal, who encouraged him to paint landscapes and still life in oils. Derek's love of colour led him to experiment with other media, particularly gouache and water-colour. It felt natural to him to specialise in floral subjects where his use of soft colours and impressionist style results in consistently delightful, delicate images.
Derek has exhibited professionally at London's Mall Gallery, The Royal Institute of Painters Annual Exhibition and the Guildhall Gallery. Further exhibitions at many other galleries throughout the UK, France and Norway have helped make Derek and his work widely known and deservedly admired.
Derek’s beautiful floral studies continue to gain in popularity, making him one of the finest artists of this genre. Derek’s work has great individuality, mixing subtlety of colour with the charm of the traditional country garden.
"There are many ways of painting flowers. Some artists concern themselves with the depiction of botanical detail and their results are superb. My interest is in creating an impression to give the viewer the sensation experienced when looking at a vase of flowers. A painting should always remind us of past pleasure"
